Coronavirus cancels Geneva auto show

Work was well underway to set up the Palexpo convention center in Geneva for this year’s auto show when the decision was made to cancel the event.

GIMS has long been considered one of the most important auto shows in the world, as it’s in neutral territory compared to Germany, the US, Japan, France, or China. But exhibiting at an auto show is an expensive affair, particularly in a place like Switzerland.

The financial consequences of the show’s cancellation are still being calculated.

Volkswagen had big plans for GIMS with the launch of the eighth-generation Golf GTI. It has already pushed back plans to show off the second of its ID electric cars, however.

Since we won’t see the new GTI in person this week, here’s a studio shot.

The mk8 Golf’s interior has gone digital.

It’s not only major automakers at GIMS. Hispano Suiza revealed this electric hypercar called the Carmen in 2019 and planned to follow it with the Carmen Boulogne at this year’s show.
